Measuring Size and Posture of People Seated in their Wheelchairs

Help us design automated vehicles so they work with wheelchairs!

To design safer and more accessible vehicles, we need more information on the range of wheelchair sizes and how people sit in them. We have a portable measurement system (based on Kinect video-game technology) to capture a 3-D picture of you in your wheelchair, plus another tool to capture more details about your wheelchair. We will ask you to wear mask and sunglasses during measuring so you can’t be recognized. We will ask you your height, weight, age, and main reason for using your wheelchair. It takes about 10 minutes and we will give you a $10 gift card for your help.

Example of scanned wheelchair

We will be out measuring at the following locations:

UM Drop-in Tennis, Monday July 17, 530-830

Ann Arbor East Health Center Lobby, Friday July 21, 1-430

ADA Celebration, Disability Network Washtenaw Monroe Livingston, Wednesday July 26 time 3-7 pm

Ann Arbor East Health Center Lobby, Friday July 28, 830-4

UM Drop-in Tennis, Monday July 31, 530-830

YMCA Drop-in Basketball, August (dates/times TBD)

If you have any other suggestions for events or locations where it would be good to measure people in their wheelchairs, please email us at WheelchairSafety@umich.edu.
