Powertrain Strategies for the 21st Century

UMTRI's third annual Powertrain Strategies for the 21st Century conference is set for Tuesday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Michigan. The event will feature an update of what manufacturers and suppliers are doing to meet future powertrain challenges as well as the implications of future government policies.
Conference sponsor Bosch Diesel Systems will provide their view of the role diesel powertrains will play in the short and long term. Participants will also hear from experts on hybrid systems, advanced batteries and charging systems, forecasts of new powertrain technologies, and the different paths companies may take to meet the government's aggressive goals.

Conference attendees will also have the opportunity to test drive two vehicles--a 2011 clean diesel Jetta and a 2009 modified clean diesel Jetta that emits up to 25 percent less carbon dioxide than a comparable port-fuel injected gasoline engine.
Confirmed conference speakers include the following:
- Bruce Belzowski, UMTRI assistant research scientist, will moderate the conference.
- Alexander Freitag, Bosch Diesel Systems, will provide an overview of his group's strategy for diesel technology.
- Tom Watson, Johnson Controls Inc., will discuss the current and future challenges of vehicle battery development.
- Guenther Raab, Continental Powertrain Engine Systems, will talk about his company's view of the evolution of powertrains over the next ten to twenty years.
- Walter McManus, UMTRI economist, will discuss his recent research on the effects of fuel economy and emission policies on manufacturer and supplier profitability.
- Alan Baum, Baum and Associates, will provide his forecast for alternative powertrain production based on his analysis of each manufacturer's powertrain strategy.
- Huei Peng, U-M College of Engineering, will discuss the current status and outlook for hybrid vehicle technologies.
- Daniel Opila, U-M College of Engineering, will discuss his recent research on energy management strategies for hybrid vehicles.
