About UMTRI

The Transportation Research Institute at The University of Michigan is committed to interdisciplinary research that will ultimately increase driving safety and further transportation systems knowledge. UMTRI is currently operating a $14.5 million per year research program, with funds received from federal and state government agencies, motor vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, and other organizations.

UMTRI's research significantly impacts highway transportation practice, in the United States and internationally. We have been involved with stakeholders and peers in the long-term development and evolution of research programs, as well as in the conduct of specific studies within those programs. You can read more on the impact of UMTRI's effective research and working method in this document.

The current staff of approximately 130 people includes full-time researchers, technical and administrative personnel, teaching faculty affiliated with the University academic departments, graduate students, and other support staff. The approach to research taken by UMTRI is reflected in the great variety of disciplines represented within the Institute, and by its involvement with other units of the University.

Many important research questions can best, and in some cases only, be answered by an integrative approach seldom possible in the traditionally rigid structure of a university, government, or corporation. UMTRI provides a setting where research scientists and University faculty accomplish interdisciplinary research, generating new knowledge and providing student training.

Some 985 short- and long-term research projects have been carried out in broad areas involving accident data collection and traffic safety analysis, bioengineering, human factors, mechanical engineering, psychology, economics, and public policy. In addition, numerous multidisciplinary research programs are currently being conducted with other units of the University involving specialized areas of engineering, business, medicine, and public health.

UMTRI was founded in 1965 through gift funds to the University of Michigan totaling $10 million, which were used to construct its four-story building and to initiate highway safety research programs. Located at the corner of Huron Parkway and Baxter Road in Ann Arbor, Michigan, UMTRI continually strives for innovation in motor vehicle safety, sound policy, and sustainable business practices in the world of transportation. We welcome the opportunity to address your transportation-related concerns.
