Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 requires that front passenger airbag systems demonstrate suppression or low-risk deployment when any of a list of child restraints are present. To facilitate the development of such systems, a set of surrogate child restraints that embody typical child restraint geometry and mass were constructed. The mass, dimensions, and installed positions of over 30 child restraints were measured to develop the design criteria for the surrogates. The surrogates are designed to be used with appropriately sized crash dummies in non-deployment testing of restraint systems.
