In conjunction with the studies of driver-selected seat position, the eye locations of hundreds of drivers were measured in vehicles with a wide range of geometry, including sports cars, sedans, minivans, pickup trucks, SUVs, and full-size vans. The data were used to develop a new eyellipse, which is a statistical model that approximates the distribution of driver eye locations using an ellipsoid representation of a multivariate normal distribution. The new model forms the basis of the Class-A (passenger car and light truck) eyellipse in SAE J941, replacing an earlier version that was originally developed in the early 1960s.
