This project resulted in ingress/egress design criteria for vehicle and doorway geometry. The project’s main goal was to identify ranges of vehicle doorway and vehicle-to-road dimensions for optimal, acceptable, and unacceptable ingress/egress ratings, and to establish population acceptance ratings for different doorway and door-opening configurations. The project also developed a test methodology that subjects can use to reliably and consistently rate the ingress/egress quality of a vehicle. The reconfigurable laboratory ingress/egress buck was instrumented to measure forces exerted on the seat, ground, and steering wheel during subject ingress/egress testing in an effort to determine if subject ratings of ingress/egress could be correlated with objective biomechanical factors involved with ingress/egress.
