UMTRI Project
Intelligent Vehicle Initiative Road Departure Crash Warning Field Operational Test
Sponsor: Federal Highway Administration
Investigator: David J. LeBlanc
11/01/2001 - 03/21/2006
A Road Departure Crash Warning System is developed as a passenger car safety feature, and is implemented on a fleet of eleven vehicles in a Field Operational Test involving naturalistic driving by laypersons.
UMTRI serves as the prime party to this agreement with the U.S. DOT, in cooperation with industrial partners, Visteon Corporation and AssistWare Technology. Navigation Technologies is also involved in the project as a contracted support organization to Visteon Technologies, a wholly-owned enterprise of the Visteon Corporation. The system in question addresses two scenarios of road departure hazard, namely, inadvertent lateral drift-off and over-speed on curves. The overall system functionality provides an integrated countermeasure addressing both hazards. No automatic control interventions are to be implemented in this package, although warnings may be issued via audible, visual, and/or haptic displays. UMTRI's role is to coordinate the partnership, contribute to development of the Driver-Vehicle Interface, design and implement the data acquisition and archiving system, design and conduct the field operational test, and analyze and report on the resulting data.
