UMTRI Project

Human Factors Lab, Field, Simulator and Evaluation Support Task Order - Heavy Truck Tire Debris Study

Sponsor: DOT-NHTSA / Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Investigator: John Woodrooffe
07/01/2006 - 06/02/2008

TSA researchers are involved in a project with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to investigate the underlying causes of tire failures in heavy and medium duty trucks, and to determine the extent of truck tire failures for retread tires.

In addition, the study (sponsored by NHTSA) will assess the crash safety problem associated with heavy truck tire failures. Data will be obtained through the analysis of tire debris samples collected on Interstate Highways in five regions of the U.S.
