The Crash Injury Research & Engineering Network (CIREN) is a multi-center research program involving a collaboration of medical and engineering researchers in academia, industry, and government. CIREN's mission is to improve the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of motor vehicle crash injuries to reduce deaths, disabilities, and human and economic costs. Biosciences staff perform the crash investigations for the UM CIREN program and provide biomechanical expertise in determining the factors associated with injury causation. In addition, Biosciences researchers have developed an advanced injury causation coding system that is being refined for use with the CIREN program.
