Detroit News: Senior needs for mobility vs. public safety

The number of elderly motorists is on the rise in Michigan where the ranks of drivers 85 and over have grown 83 percent in just over a decade, according to the Detroit News.

Balancing seniors' needs for mobility with public safety has become a national issue as baby boomers enter their golden years and medications keep them healthier longer.

"It's not aging that's the problem, but it's the medical problems and the medications people take to treat them that make driving more difficult," said UMTRI research scientist David Eby, head of Behavioral Sciences.
