UMTRI Shines at TRB Meeting

The eighty-ninth meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) took place on January 10-14 in Washington, D.C. UMTRI Director Peter Sweatman, researchers, and staff joined transportation professionals from around the world at the prestigious, annual meeting.

The TRB annual meeting attracts more than 10,000 transportation professionals from around the world, with more than 3,000 presentations covering all transportation modes. Many UMTRI researchers presented papers or presided over session and committee meetings.

  • Timothy J. Gordon presided over the Vehicle-Highway Automation Committee. He also presided over the sessions Control and Electrification of Highway Vehicles and Technical Challenges for Future IntelliDrive Applications. During the session Analysis Planning for SHRP 2 Naturalistic Driving Study, he presented "Site-Based Data Collection Technique."
  • John Woodrooffe presented "Dynamic Stability of Trucks" with Anthony Germanchev in the session Truck Transport Safety, Productivity, and Sustainability. He also presented "Truck Productivity: International Performance Benchmarking" with Klaus-Peter Glaeser and Paul Nordengen in the session Commercial Vehicle Productivity, Pricing, and Enforcement.
  • Daniel Blower and Paul E. Green presented "Motor Carrier Type and Driver History in Fatal Bus Crashes" in a session on Truck and Bus Safety Research.
  • Jonathon Rupp presented "Use of Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network Data for Occupant Protection" during the session Methodologies and Tools to Study Occupant Protection-Related Injuries.
  • David W. Eby presented "Potential Mechanisms Underlying Part-Time Belt Users."
  • Bob Sweet attended the meeting of the TRB Information Services Committee, during which he assumed the position of committee chair. He also attended meetings of the Library and Information Science in Transportation (LIST) Committee and LIST's Transportation Research Thesaurus Subcommittee.
  • Steve Karamihas presided over a session on Modeling the Interaction Between Pavement and its Loading. He also presented "Update on SHRP2 Real-Time Smoothness Measurement on PCCP During Construction Study (P10-0505)" with Robert Otto Rasmussen and Helga Torres.

Other UMTRI staff members who participated in the TRB meeting included Trudy Bahr, Todd Anuskiewicz, Walter McManus, Ray Bingham, Lisa Molnar, Renee St. Louis, Jennifer Zakrajsek, Jim Sayer, Francois Dion, and Ralph Robinson.
