Facilities & Services

In order to conduct high quality research in the field of transporation, UMTRI staff members utilize an extensive array of labs and equipment. Whether it is testing the biomechanics of injury mechanisms, investigating heavy-duty vehicle dynamics, or analyzing the interface between driver and vehicle interior, UMTRI's physical and virtual facilities get the job done. When existing materials will not do the job, researchers and support staff excel at fabrication and programming to create what is necessary to achieve reliable and consistent results.

We operate a capable fixed-base driving simulator, a fleet of test vehicles fitted with advanced safety and data acquisition systems, and a sled lab for occupant restraint testing. In addition, UMTRI's library houses one of the world's most extensive collections of literature on traffic safety.

In addition to the contract research conducted at UMTRI, we also provide for-fee services to interested parties who wish to evaluate child safety seat performance, test wheelchair and wheelchair tiedown/restraints, request crash data analysis, conduct publication searches and prepare reproductions, or request automotive test drive evaluations.
