Vehicle Lighting and Signaling

UMTRI researchers study the effects of nighttime driving in terms of nighttime visibility and the effectiveness of various types of headlights. Researchers investigate driver preferences for tungsten-halogen versus high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlamps, discomfort glare from HID headlamps, night-vision-enhancement systems, and drivers' use of high- and low-beam headlamps. They also study the viability of rear lighting systems, mirror-mounted turn signals, and the development of a headlighting rating system.
