Anthropometry

UMTRI has a long history of conducting anthropometric studies of children and adults, with a particular focus in recent years on documenting anthropometry and positioning of drivers and passengers within the automotive environment. Standard anthropometric measurement tools and techniques are used to select and document body dimensions and proportions of subject populations, and various three-dimensional measurement techniques are used to capture the three-dimensional locations of body landmarks and the geometry of surface contours. The latter include stereo-photogrammetry, Faro Arm digitizers, and light- and sound-based motion capture systems. These tools have been used to document the seated anthropometry of drivers and passengers, including special populations such as pregnant occupants.
