Heavy Trucks (TIFA)

UMTRI's Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics (CNTBS) has operated the Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA) survey continuously since 1980. The TIFA file is recognized as the nation's most reliable and detailed source of information on medium and heavy trucks involved in fatal traffic accidents in the United States. CNTBS staff use TIFA data to address current traffic safety issues related to trucks and truck drivers. They are experts in safety issues related to truck design and operations, vehicle handling and mechanical condition, and the operational pressures that affect truck drivers. The techniques and experience developed can be more broadly applied to the study of traffic safety, encompassing all vehicle types.
