Data at UMTRI

The data generated through UMTRI research are the raw materials from which new knowledge is synthesized, and UMTRI's richness in transportation-systems data is well known throughout the world. Superb databases, built through surveys and field-operational tests, have helped propel UMTRI into the lead in a number of areas.

UMTRI's storehouse of naturalistic driving data provides the foundation for projects in integrated vehicle-based safety systems, vehicle-infrastructure integration, and other areas of intelligent transportation systems. Key driver-behavior data helps our understanding of how humans integrate with these intelligent systems.

Biomechanics data, gained through in-depth crash investigations and crash occupant modeling, has led to some of the most important developments in the understanding of injury biomechanics in motor-vehicle crashes.

UMTRI's Transportation Data Center offers a unique public service with its extensive crash databases. Analysis performed on these databases offers a key decision-making tool for law enforcement officials, policymakers, and industry researchers.

UMTRI also maintains the most comprehensive and detailed database of truck and bus fatal crashes available, analyses of which appear in the widely read and relied on Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents and Buses Involved in Fatal Accidents reports.

Data gathered in automotive consumer research and surveys of auto industry thought leaders will aid in understanding key burgeoning issues in sustainability and in technologies that affect our use of energy and our development of alternative energy sources.
