Working with CNTBS
At the Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics (CNTBS), located within the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), we regularly conduct national truck and bus accident studies: Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA) and Buses Involved in Fatal Accidents (BIFA). The Federal government supports our work.
In the course of our research, a wide variety of respondents from the private sector as well as the law enforcement community are contacted. We rely upon the voluntary participation of vehicle owners and drivers; bus and trucking companies; reporting and investigating officers; commercial vehicle inspectors and other individuals to provide information used in CNTBS studies. Our interest is in the physical characteristics, types, and uses of heavy trucks and buses. Attributes such as weights; lengths; cab and body styles; capacities and axle counts are our concern.
All information received is confidential. Only summary results are published. Furthermore, the Michigan Confidentiality Law (Act No. 26 of the Public Acts of 1980) protects the information in our files from disclosure. The survey materials are destroyed when the statistical file is completed.
