WORLD CLASS MANUFACTURING
Competing in the Global Economy
Monday, August 1, 7:30am - 1:00pm
Moderator: Patrick Hammett, Ph.D., Assistant Research Scientist, Automotive Analysis, Adjunct Professor Six Sigma Programs, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute

Brought on principally by global competition, the requirements for manufacturing performance have never been so high. Today's most competitive manufacturers have learned how to produce extremely high quality at low cost, both consistently and repetitively. The consumer has been the winner with extensive product choices at incredibly low prices. With global access to low-cost labor, no aspect of manufacturing can afford to remain static. Leading manufacturers assess their global strategies while they simultaneously consider the optimal combination of advanced technologies. Unfortunately, lower volumes and operating margins today often limit the choices and increase the risk of poor decisions. Operationally, world-class manufacturers have to address product and process standardization (to promote lean), need a broad systems life-cycle perspective of cost, and need to remain agile. No one ever said it was going to be easy - but very few thought it would be this hard.

Patrick Hammett moderated the Monday, August 1st and Tuesday, August 2nd sessions. This year, the world-class manufacturing seminars focused on presentations and discussions about how manufacturers are addressing these challenges. Key topics included global manufacturing strategies, systems planning, and building and sustaining technological competitiveness. We discussed new business models involving collaborative relationships between customers and competitors. We presented specific case examples on manufacturing cost reduction through design and implementing new manufacturing technologies

WORKFORCE STRATEGY IN A GLOBAL AUTOMOTIVE ECONOMY
Competing in the Global Economy

Tuesday, August 2, 1:30pm - 4:30pm

As suppliers strive to meet their customer's needs overseas by relocating business and production activities or seeking business prospects overseas, staff recruitment, retention, and deployment activities become increasingly complex. This complexity demands effective planning processes and forecasting metrics to assess future human capital and staffing needs.

"Workforce Strategy in a Global Automotive Economy" will explore the human capital challenges that face major suppliers as they globalize. Panelists discussed the impact an organization's structure has on global workforce strategy and the merits of using workforce metrics to align company's staffing needs with its global business objectives.

We presented the preliminary results of Automotive Analysis' recent research, in cooperation with Watson Wyatt that focuses on the ways major suppliers organize globally and how their workforce strategies are crucial to the success of these efforts.

The opening of the Indian and Chinese automotive industries to foreign manufacturers and suppliers has contributed to the explosion of their markets for automobiles. Automotive manufacturers and suppliers view India and China as the largest combination of domestic automotive market and outsourcing opportunities to appear in decades.

North American companies are deluged with information about the potential opportunities, but typically know very little about what the Indians and Chinese think about their automotive future. This session will provide attendees with the perspectives of Indian and Chinese manufacturers, suppliers, government, and consumers on what they think the future will hold for this industry and their countries.

Issues such as the future market; joint venture relationships;external pressures such as infrastructure, air quality, and oil security; and the future strucutre of the industry will form the basis for discussion. The discussion will also be supported by the Automotive Analysis recent research that looks at how auto executives, govenment officials and industry experts in China, in particular, view these issues in the context of their current and future development.
