WORLD CLASS MANUFACTURING
Manufacturing Strategy and Technology for Global Competition
Monday, August 2, 7:30am - 1:30pm
Moderator: Patrick Hammett, Ph.D., Autotmotive Analysis, Adjunct Professor, Six Sigma Programs, University of Michigan

This session will present some of the latest trends in world class product development and what companies can do to make it work. It will focus on topics that illuminate the key factors of product development success through comparisons of varied successful product development processes. CAR will present some results of its Product Development Delphi study indicating the current state and future trends in product development in the automotive industry. Speakers from domestic and foreign OEMs and from outside the auto industry will tell the stories of their product development systems and highlight the elements of their system that make it a success, as well as the challenges that remain ahead.

LEAN SIX SIGMA
Best Enterprise Practices in the Automotive Industry
Monday, August 2, 1:30pm - 4:30pm
Cochairs: Donald Lynch, Ph.D., Corporate Master Black Belt, Six Sigma Department, Visteon, Inc
Patrick Hammett, Ph.D., Assistant Research Scientist, AAG, Adjunct Professor, Six Sigma Programs, University of Michigan

Many companies make the mistake of viewing lean and six sigma as two unrelated toolkits to be used in isolation on different problems. Experience has shown that lean cannot bring a process under statistical control, and six sigma alone cannot dramatically improve process speed or reduce invested capital. Used together, lean six sigma complement and reinforce each other. This workshop will demonstrate the link between variation and flow will further show how to define six sigma projects from a value stream perspective.

Speakers in this workshop will emphasize that lean and six sigma are related parts of a total system and philosophy of management, and that lean tools an six sigma tools are interrelated and provide a powerful toolkit in support of the overall system. Best practices and actual implementations will be the focus of the presentations from industry OEMs and suppliers. Presentations will cover both manufacturing and service/transactional case studies recognizing that lean six sigma is being applied to the entire corporate enterprise

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Balancing Cost and Value in the Automotive Enterprise
Monday, August 2, 1:30pm - 4:30pm
Chair: Bruce Belzowski, Senior Research Associate, Autotmotive Analysis, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute

Information technology (IT) has played a key role in allowing companies to integrate their internal and external processes. As IT matures, companies are beginning to understand where it enables them to perform activities better and faster and where it is not proving as valuable. In particular, companies are trying to balance the cost of implementing IT initiatives with the value it provides their companies.

They are implementing a variety of IT efforts in the context of intensifying global competition, and the need for understanding the impacts of these efforts grows as manufacturers and suppliers extend their activities globally. Manufacturer, supplier, and information technology representatives from key activities such as sales and marketing, product development, supply chain management, and manufacturing will discuss where they are finding value in IT and where they see challenges. This seminar will identify how a company’s responses to these challenges may further enhance—or erode—its competitive advantage, and panelists will explore the available strategic and tactical options.
