Supply Chain Management: New Business Models and Supplier Survival
Monday, August 5, 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Co-Chairs: Michael Flynn and Kara Alkire

The industry enters the new century with a grim awareness that its standard practices may prove unprofitable even in near-record sales years. As each part of the value chain seeks to develop, adapt, and adopt new ways of doing business and making profits, the choices of companies at each level constrain and shape the availability and usefulness of options for other companies and levels. Suppliers in particular are forced to make strategic decisions in rapidly changing business environments molded by their customers, in turn forging an environment for their own suppliers. What are the appropriate strategies, customer and supplier selection practices, and approaches to sustainable relationships in this new world? What must companies do differently to survive-what old practices must be abandoned, what new ones adopted? The panel will address these issues, emphasizing the key success factors for system integrators and larger indirect suppliers in the years ahead.

The Value of Connectivity/Integration: Critical Supply Chain Issues
Tuesday, August 6, 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Co-Chairs: Michael Flynn and Bruce Belzowski

The industry's efforts to exploit the potential of the IT and structural "revolutions" relies to large extent on the strategies and actions companies pursue to integrate themselves across activities, functions, and with their customers and suppliers. A bewildering array of "connected" efforts confronts the industry, ranging from product development through strategic sourcing to sharing knowledge and even to after-market service. What is the value of these efforts, and what are their implications for developing a sustainable, competitive value chain strategy? How well will the industry integrate itself, and how will that influence company costs and returns? The workshop panel will explore these challenging issues, describe how integration will shape the value chain structure, and discuss the emerging threats and opportunities that integration and connectivity present.
