The 2002 Michigan census accident file contains 395,515 records, the vehicle file contains 683,704 records, and the occupant file contains 714,657 records. In addition to the census data sets, a truck data set has been built that contains 13,515 accident records, 26,021 vehicle records, and 27,092 occupant records.

Data collected for the Ignition Interlock variable (V173) is problematic due to initial errors in completing the UD- 10 form and subsequent scanning problems.

The variable Highway Class (V13) shows a large decrease in Interstate crashes. This may be the result of new location software currently in development by the State of Michigan.

The 2002 Michigan pedestrian and bicyclist records were not all processed correctly. Approximately one third of these records indicate "driver" for occupant position and this is the only identification available for the nonmotorist vehicle record (V101 Vehicle Type is "other".) The crash-level flags, V50 Flag:Pedestrian and V52 Flag:Bicyclist correctly identify all such crashes as they used information not subsequently available on the computerized crash record. The variable V51 Flag:Nonmotorist Record Present is not correct as it relied on the driver position variable.
