Information technology forms a set of linking technologies that can markedly accelerate achieving both internal company goals and the coordination of activities across the production chain. However, IT is complex because it consists of two crucial elements, the IT infrastructure (physical hardware, networks, etc.) and IT software applications (Enterprise Resource Planning, etc.). These must be coordinated and balanced for effective IT implementation. This report explores the implementation and successful exploitation of IT technologies, building on both mail surveys and face-to-face interviews with system integrator CEOs, CFOs, and CIOs in the fall of 1997.
