Sponsored by the Automotive Parts Advisory Committee, the purpose of this study is to assist the Committee in terms of designing and measuring the current and likely future problem of automotive parts trade with Japan in the 1992-1996 period. The study produced: * an update of the 1992 U.S.-Japan automotive-trade deficit based on collected custom value totals for more than 70 separate product categories of imports and exports; * a forecast of levels of Japanese imports in the United States, and U.S. exports to Japan, which covers five major categories of automotive trade in 1996 (small passenger cars, large passenger cars, trucks/vans, other vehicles, and total automotive parts); * a careful examination of the parts- and components-sourcing strategies of the leading Japanese vehicle producers in the U.S.; and * a thorough analysis of the sourcing strategies of the traditional Big Three vehicle makers, examining the likely flow of parts and components from the U.S.-based suppliers, both traditional and Japanese-affiliated, and from importers, based in Japan and elsewhere.
