The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA) bases its 2008 FARS reports on Version 18Jun09 of the FARS files.

The data sets document 34,017 crashes (with 11,291 of them involving two vehicles), 50,430 vehicles, 78,066 occupants and 5,960 nonmotorists.

PLEASE NOTE: Starting in 2005, NHTSA codes a record for not-in-transport (NIT) vehicles (parked or working in the road) and their "occupants," who are considered non-motorists. These NIT vehicle records are NOT included in the ADAAS vehicle and 2-vehicle datasets. The NIT "occupants" are in the non-motorist file (as they have always been).
