Unlike other NASS datasets the PCDS data is not a statistical sample and, therefore, there are no case weight variables. Primary case selection criteria include:

  • 1) A pedestrian must be involved. Pedestrian is defined as a person on or adjacent to a traffic way on public or private property. Bicyclists and others on nonmotor conveyances are not included.
  • 2) A late model vehicle (model year 1990+) moving forward must be involved. The pedestrian must be the only vehicle impact. The vehicle portion striking the pedestrian must be original equipment and not have previous damage.
  • 3) The first vehicle-pedestrian contact must be forward of the vehicle A pillar.
  • 4) Cases must be initiated at the crash scene.
